 U-Tsang (TAR)

Most westerners are familiar with popular destinations in Central Tibet (also known as the Tibet Autonomous Region) such as Lhasa, Samye, Gyantse, Shigatse, Everest base camp, the overland drive along the Friendship Highway between Lhasa and Nepal, and the major monasteries in and around Lhasa. We make every effort to make your travel experience more authentic. We offer cultural, spiritual, and trekking adventures from 7 days to several weeks. You’re welcome to look over our sample itineraries, or let us customize a trip of a lifetime today. Learn more

If you’re looking to experience Tibet’s living and breathing culture in communities that are not bound by the heavy travel restrictions of the TAR, consider visiting Kham, Tibet’s wild frontier of mountains and monasteries. Our coop members across the Kham region are ready to welcome you into their own communities for trekking, local activities and festivals, and homestays. Here are some sample itineraries to get you started. Learn more

If you’re looking to explore the Amdo region of Tibet, birthplace of the 14th Dalai Lama and the 10th Panchen Lama, or to visit Kumbum Jampa Ling near Xining, and Labrang Tashi Khyil south of Lanzhou, consider our 10-day Amdo Excursion. Amdo is one of the three traditional regions of Tibet and today it is annexed into the provinces of Gansu, Sichuan and Qinghai. Like the U-Tsang and Kham regions of Tibet, Amdo Tibetans speak their own dialect, practice Tibetan Buddhism and live primarily as farmers and nomads. Learn more
